For the first time in history, SpaceX has successfully landed the first stage of a space-faring rocket.



This may seem mundane, but it's an absolutely amazing breakthrough that has the potentially to radically change spaceflight.  The first stage of a rocket is by far the most complex (SpaceX's rocket has 9 engines in the first stage and only one in the second stage) and thus the most expensive (roughly $45m of a $60m rocket in this case). 

Elon Musk estimated that only $200,000 of the rocket's cost was spent on fuel.  There will undoubtedly be a substantial cost to analyze and rebuild the first stage, but it's entirely possible that we've just seen the cost of spaceflight drop by ~98%.  I expect to see future rocket designs improved by analyzing what has been damaged on this (and subsequent) rockets, which will likely lead to rockets that can be refueled and reused in a very short time frame with very little overhaul required.
