I read an article that said the PS3 would outsell the 360 by the year 2012. Very interesting...

I also read an article that said we would all have jet packs by the year 1980 and yet here we are...

As the proud new owner of an HDMI-equipped TV and DVD player, both of which support 1080p, I can honestly say... who cares?

Sure, 1080p via HDMI looks pretty good, but I can honestly say that it isn't significantly different than old-school RCA connections, and certainly no better than component cabling.  That said, I do plan to buy component cables for the Wii, since 480p is not available through traditional RCA cables.  I'll let you guys know if it offers any real improvement.

(...probably should have bought the $400 Monster cables.  Ha!)

Mere and I bought a Samsung 30" Widescreen TV.  It's a flat-tube CRT, so it has a small form factor for a CRT but is still insanely heavy.  Just ask Spanky, he helped me carry it up the stairs.

We opted for the CRT because it was quite a bit cheaper than an equivalent LCD/Plasma display and had a much longer life expectancy.  I very rarely watch TV (and don't even have TV service) and don't watch movies very often, so I expect any TV I purchase to last at least 8-10 years.  CRT's typically last about twice as long as LCD's, so it was a good purchase.

The DVD player we purchased was a Pioneer unit (I can get the model number tonight if you want) that supported 1080p and had HDMI output.  The single best part of HDMI, in my opinion, is that all video and audio functionality is run through a single (extremely expensive!) cable.  Best Buy had two other units that also offered 1080p, but this model also had a variety of other functions (including a USB port for picture viewing!) for only $20 more.  It will also play mp3 and WMA audio and WMV/AVI/MPG videos from a burned DVD.  If memory serves, the DVD player was $119 out the door.  I didn't buy an HD-DVD/BluRay player because I'm not a consumer whore.

Once we buy a house and get everything moved over, we'll probably drop some cash on a decent home theater sound system.  There's not much point in adding surround sound speakers in the apartment!

A guy I know said that he would trade Bioshock for Oblivion temporarily in a little while, so I will get to play it at some point.

I believe that's called piracy, sir!  You should stop that and give me $3,000 not to report you to GIAA (the G stands for Game)

I should also mention that the first thing I hooked up to the TV (outside of the DVD player) was my Super Nintendo.  Who needs 1080p when you're living in a 16-bit world?

I hear that the CRTs have to replace the $600 bulbs every 2-3 years.

CRT's don't have bulbs, they've got electron tubes.  I'm guessing you must be thinking of projection TV's, which offer crappy quality and need bulb replacements every 2-3 years (last I heard, it may be longer now).  That being said, they're very cheap and extremely light for their size.

I recently purchased a 360, and rented Bioshock.  I'm not really into gaming that much, but I don't know if I liked it that much.  Don't get me wrong, the graphics, and physics were amazing.  But the entire concept was a little boring.  I couldn't play it longer than a half an hour without wanting to just do something else.

But that was after just playing Resident Evil 4 for the Wii.  Which by the way is a really fun concept with the controller.  I loved that game.

well bioshock is along the same lines as system shock 2 if anyone played that. I know eric and i rocked out to that and it was a creepy experience the whole time. It is more laid back and its about atmosphere and getting creeped out!

If you want fun and nonstop action get Halo 3. I hear thats top notch as far as pacing and shoot em up action.

Halo 3?  WTF?  You guys should be boycotting Halo on principal.

Don't you remember when Microsoft stole Halo from the PC?  It was supposed to launch on PC a full year before the Xbox was even released, but Microsoft bought out the company to turn Halo into a launch title for the Xbox.  When the PC port finally came out a year after the Xbox was announced, it was extremely buggy and ran like crap.  If you ask me, Microsoft intentionally bombed the game to make the Xbox seem more powerful than it really was.  Why else would a title originally destined for the PC run so poorly when it had an extra two years to grow (and for hardware to get more powerful)?

Screw Halo.

Ya and I heard when Doom 3 came out that it was the most estupenelouses game in the whole wide world....and then I found out you can't use a flashlight AND a weapon at the same time...even though the whole game is mostly darkness.  Then they told me it was the best looking game in the whole wide world...and then I found out the whole game is in darkness.  Then I found out the whole span of video game magazines loved it just oh so much...and then I found out most of them were paid to say that.

Halo 3...yes coolness...but come on people...we don't have to wait in line for it...seemingly because you already have your pre-order slip...*whispers* your game's not going anywhere.  Where's it going?  It's going nowhere.

Nice reference to the Saints, Stewie.   Wink

For what it's worth, pre-order slips no longer seem to actually reserve a copy.  When the 360, Wii, and PS3 launched, the stores didn't have enough supply to fill all their pre-orders, so vendors offered them on a first-come, first-serve basis to slip holders.  That infuriates me, and I very rarely pre-order anything these days as a result.

I think platforms are different than games though.  Games you just stamp out and ship out whereas platforms you have to build these complicated boxes filled with all these small parts and you have to make them not overheat the first time you turn them on...you have to make em last for at least a week and then "loose" them in the mail when the consumers send them to be replaced *coughXboxcough*.
