OMG...I must have this!  Amazing what people are developing.  Love Plex too.

That looks pretty sweet.  I've dabbled with Virtual Desktop and a couple other "theater" apps for media playback.  They're kind of neat, but I don't think I'd ever want to watch a feature-length movie (or TV show for that matter) using a VR headset.

The developer said that 3D movies look better on the headset too.

Nvidia announced the GTX 1080 Ti this morning, which will supposedly be available for purchase next Friday.  It supposedly offers a 35% increase in performance over the vanilla GTX 1080 along with better cooling and 11GB of VRAM.

http://www.pcmag.com/news/352089/gtx-1080-ti-is-nvidias-new-flagship-gpu

Unfortunately, it looks like the VRAM is still GDDR5X, not HBM, which is expected but still disappointing.

Just wondering what you think about Rand Paul cosponsoring the ISP snooping bill?

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/03/senate-votes-to-let-isps-sell-your-w...

He abstained on the actual vote, but that strikes me as political theater.

Well, Rand has been a red headed step child to me when I compare him to his father.  There's a lot more I could say about him but that's a good primer for my thoughts:

While I wish I could have a choice to allow my ISP to share or not share those things, if the ISP enters into a voluntary contract with me and that's in the contract then I don't think the feds should have anything to do with it.  So in once sense I agree with the bill but would like it better if it did away with previous legislation instead of pretty much enacting new to override the old.

Who I can ultimately blame are regional governments who enter into agreements with ISPs and give them a legal monopoly that limits competition.  If my data was important to me and I would be willing to pay an "unknown" in popularity ISP that would protect them then I have a greater ability to do so without only one to three companies involved in trying to screw me over the least.

Here's the thing though, the NSA is doing far, far worse than the ISP is doing.  By selling my info, they are theoretically keeping my rates lower or expanding into new technologies.  The NSA has agreements with Britain and Israel that gives them 24/7 access to those databases.  So not even "my" government has sole access to my person/property/papers without a warrant...foreign powers do.  That, I feel, is far worse and would like to see people consistently angry over both these items if they don't like the ISP case.

With all the stuff going on, I've decided I'm going to take the plunge and get PIA VPN.

Those that use it, how do you get things like Plex (which is set up for port forwarding already) and CrashPlan to work?

I will be wanting to turn on DNS leak protection

I can't speak with first-hand knowledge about Plex, but I can't imagine a VPN will give it any trouble.  CrashPlan will keep working away without so much as a hiccup.

Generally, the only applications that don't like VPNs are those that use your IP address for security (e.g. it only permits a specific IP to connect), which is rare.  Also, some streaming video services like NetFlix and CrunchyRoll specifically block know VPN IP ranges due to contractual stupidity with their content providers.

Keep in mind the PIA permits 5 simultaneous VPN connections per account, so you can use it on your laptop, phone, PC, etc.

Thanks, Plex does do a specific port forwarding and I found a couple of tutorials that I think can make it work.  May have to use something like OpenVPN with it.

I use OpenVPN on one of my boxes with a PIA account.  It works great.  The only downside is that you have to configure all of the parameters independently for each endpoint (e.g. city you're connecting to), which is a bit of a pain.  Let me know if you run into any trouble.

Well up for a day and everything seems to be working fine.

DNS hide is on and working.

No issues with Plex or Crashplan.  Didn't have to touch a thing.  Plex connected outside the network.

Was able to connect to the FTP just fine.  I've noticed maybe a little bit of a slow down but maybe I'm just looking at it too closely.

Thanks again for the suggestion.  Now - off to do legal things!
