Overweight woman stuck in South African cave

Tue Jan 2, 6:54 AM ET

CAPE TOWN (AFP) - An overweight woman got stuck in a well-known South African cave for nearly twelve hours on New Year's Day, trapping 23 others in the process.

The woman was stuck inside the "Tunnel of Love" shortly after noon and was freed with the help of liquid paraffin and a pulley around 11:30 pm (2130 GMT), said Hein Gerstner, manager of the Cango Caves in the Western Cape.

"She was really quite a large woman," he told AFP Tuesday. "She was forewarned at the ticket office and by the guide that she might have difficulty on the tour, but she insisted on going along."

Rescuers from two nearby towns and a private ambulance service were called in to help.

"We used liquid paraffin to grease the surface area and used a pulley to lift her," said Gerstner. "She was eventually carried out on a stretcher."

Twenty-three other people trapped in another tunnel behind the woman were given blankets, water, chocolate bars and ablution buckets during the rescue effort.

The group included two asthmatic children and a diabetic for whom insulin had to be brought from a nearby town, said Gerstner.

Once freed, the woman was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, and was due to be discharged on Tuesday afternoon. None of the others came to any harm.

"We regularly have people getting stuck in the caves for an hour or so, but never anything on this scale," said Gerstner. "This was a freak. None of our guides, some of whom have been here for more than 40 years, have ever seen anything like it."

No religion and an end to war: how thinkers see the future

Alok Jha, science correspondent
Monday January 1, 2007
The Guardian

People's fascination for religion and superstition will disappear within a few decades as television and the internet make it easier to get information, and scientists get closer to discovering a final theory of everything, leading thinkers argue today.

The web magazine Edge (www.edge.org) asked more than 150 scientists and intellectuals: "What are you optimistic about?" Answers included hope for an extended human life span, a bright future for autistic children, and an end to violent conflicts around the world.

Philosopher Daniel Denett believes that within 25 years religion will command little of the awe it seems to instil today. The spread of information through the internet and mobile phones will "gently, irresistibly, undermine the mindsets requisite for religious fanaticism and intolerance".

Biologist Richard Dawkins said that physicists would give religion another problem: a theory of everything that would complete Albert Einstein's dream of unifying the fundamental laws of physics. "This final scientific enlightenment will deal an overdue death blow to religion and other juvenile superstitions."

Part of that final theory will be formulated by scientists working on the Large Hadron Collider, a particle accelerator at Cern in Geneva, which is to be switched on this year. It will smash protons together to help scientists understand what makes up the most fundamental bits of the universe.

Steven Pinker, a psychologist at Harvard University, highlighted the decline of violence: "Most people, sickened by the bloody history of the 20th century, find this claim incredible. Yet, as far as I know, every systematic attempt to document the prevalence of violence over centuries and millennia (and, for that matter, the past 50 years), particularly in the west, has shown the overall trend is downward."

John Horgan, of the Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, was optimistic "that one day war - large-scale, organised group violence - will end once and for all".

This will also be the year that we get to grips with our genomes. George Church, a geneticist at Harvard Medical School, believes we will learn "so much more about ourselves and how we interact with our environment and fellow humans".

Simon Baron-Cohen, a psychologist at Cambridge University, focused on autistic children, saying their outlook had never been better. "There is a remarkably good fit between the autistic mind and the digital age," he said. "Many develop an intuitive understanding of computers, in the same way other children develop an intuitive understanding of people."

Leo Chalupa, a neurobiologist at the University of California, Davis, predicted that, by the middle of this century, it would not be uncommon for people to lead active lives well beyond the age of 100. He added: "We will be able to regenerate parts of the brain that have been worn out. So better start thinking what you'll be doing with all those extra years."

The noted French atheist Voltaire, who died in 1778, declared that in 100 years from his time Christianity would be swept from existence and passed into history.  Only 50 years after his death, the Geneva Bible Society's used Voltaire's press and house to produce stacks of Bibles.

How many times have we heard this mantra.  Religion, will never pass away.  People are always going to be spiritually hungry and even if there wasn't a God or a higher existence...we would still wonder if there was something out there bigger than us.  The only religions that pass away are they cults and the crazy sects who continuously found their principles upon men/women who make false predictions or suicide people.  "Christian Scientists" and Jonestown are two such examples.

Whoever agrees with this article is clearly delusional if they think it will become true.

Britain finally pays off wartime Allies

By AP

LONDON -- Britain has paid the last installment on its World War II-era debt to Canada and the U.S., making a final $100 million US in payments yesterday to the wartime Allies.

Britain was left with a debt of $4.3 billion US to the U.S. and $1.2 billion US to Canada more than 60 years ago when London took out loans to finance reconstruction. Annual payments on the loans, at 2% interest, have since totalled nearly $10 billion.

'VITAL SUPPORT'

"This week, we finally honour in full our commitments to the U.S. and Canada for the support they gave us 60 years ago," Economic Secretary Ed Balls said. "It was vital support which helped Britain defeat Nazi Germany and secure peace and prosperity in the postwar period."

Most American assistance came through the Lend-Lease program -- nearly $27 billion in equipment, food, weapons and fuel. When the program ended in 1945, Britain took out loans for reconstruction and agreed to repay the money over 50 years, but the loan's terms allowed deferred payments due to economic conditions.

The total amount borrowed is equivalent to about $60 billion US in today's purchasing power.

Wow, that's pretty freakin' cool!  I wonder how many other "allies" even bothered to pay back their loans?  The US does an awful lot of debt cancellation, and that's nothing new.

100 respond for broken rectal thermometer
CARMEL, N.Y. (AP) - It was quite a New Year's Eve at the home of Richard Berger in Carmel - in Putnam County. Someone in the house broke a rectal thermometer and the family called 911 around 10:30 to report the small mercury spill.

Several dozen volunteers from the Carmel Fire Department responded to the house on Brookview Drive.

Fire Chief Darryl Johnson says mercury is a hazardous material that can cause stomach problems if inhaled.

Men wearing protective gear used wet sponges to clean up the puddle.

It was packaged and brought to the Carmel firehouse where the county health department will dispose of it today.

The Berger family was not hurt.

A hundred people... for a thermometer!  Helllllooooo, Nanny State!

Young Girl Facing Charges After Wetting Pants
Click Here For More Watercooler News

(AP) DANVILLE, Pa. A 12-year-old special education student in Montour County was charged with disorderly conduct after authorities said she deliberately wet her pants at school.

Her mother told the Press Enterprise it happened because her daughter was frightened by the principal.

The girl had been preparing a holiday lunch with her classmates and teachers at Danville Middle School on December 20th.

Her mother said when her daughter refused to go to the kitchen to wash some pots and pans, teachers summoned principal Kevin Duckwork, who confronted the girl.

She then wet her pants.

Her mother said the girl is terrified of Duckwork and has wet herself during previous confrontations with him. But Danville Police Chief Eric Gill said school officials are at their “wit’s end” with the girl, and they believe her actions were deliberate.

Did we become England and no one told me?!

A MAN died after two ambulance crews could not be sent to his aid — because they were on EU-enforced lunch breaks.

The victim collapsed in a betting shop, five minutes from his local ambulance station.

But under the barmy European Working Time Directive, exposed by The Sun last month, crews couldn’t be disturbed.

A paramedic was sent in a car and realised the unnamed man was having a heart attack.

He dialled 999 but an ambulance did not arrive for half an hour.

By then, the patient had died on the floor in Edmonton, North London.

Last night London Ambulance Service chiefs ordered a full probe.

The EU rules — which have angered staff — mean crews in the capital can be called out only in the last ten minutes of their 30-minute breaks.

Otherwise, they are banned from helping, even if there is a road crash outside their building.

Other UK ambulance services have chosen to opt out of the rules.

A London spokesperson said last night: “We can confirm crews were on a rest break at the time.

“Our sympathies are with the patient’s family.”

MAWHA HA HA HA HA!!!  You know you want socialized medicine in AMERIKA!!  So sayeth the Demos.

If this were to happen in a country with full-blown socialized healthcare, the ambulance never would've responded because only two paramedics would've been assigned to the whole freakin' country.

Birthday-suit parties all the rage for Ivy League students
CRAIG HOWIE

STUDENTS at America's prestigious Ivy League universities are rebelling against their colleges' stuffy reputations, casting off society's norms along with their clothes to hold naked parties.

The Pundits, a secretive society at Yale University, initiated the events - which profess to be non-sexual in nature - in the mid-1990s, open to a select few. The society claims that president George Bush's daughter, Barbara, attended a naked party during her second year, in 2002. The White House has always declined to comment.

But the naked parties are now fixtures among liberal students being primed to become the nation's elite.

It doesn't matter what school you go to...college is college.  The next article will be "Under age Ivy League students drink beer!"

Although I wonder if this article knows that Skull and Bones makes it members lie naked in a coffin and recount their sexual activities...oh well boys will be Satanic worshiping boys!

Stolen Library Book Leads to Shooting?

ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) - Police say a security guard at the Anderson County Library fired his gun at a car after the driver triggered a security alarm.

Police say security guard James Turner asked the woman to stop after the alarm went off as she left around 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon.

A police report states Turner chased the woman as she ran to her car and he said the bumper brushed his knee as she pulled away.

Police say the guard then fired into the driver's door. Authorities say the woman kept going and they don't know if she was hurt.

Library director Carl Stone says he's asked Cherokee Security Systems not to send Turner back to the library. Stone says no one should be hurt over a missing library book.

Wow someone give this guy a job at the DHS...they could use another good hitman.
