I really wish The Witcher series wasn't an Xbox exclusive, as I have no desire to purchase an Xbox One and I have been a PS3 user this entire generation.

The Witcher 3 is coming to XBox One and PS4.  You can also play all three Witcher titles on this awesome system called the PC.  It looks better, it plays better, it is better.

I'm simply too lazy these days to update and constantly work on a gaming PC.

You say that, but I bet you'd have a blast playing Mario Kart at a LAN.

Microsoft will probably give GameStop some sort of incentive to continue supporting them.  GameStop still moves a lot of merchandise for the console manufacturers.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if they used a similar methodology to some current-gen games in which a code can be purchased to permit used games to be played as though they were new.  These will likely be sold at a slight discount (say, $10 off) compared to the cost of a new game.

I wonder if the consoles would get on a system like Steam and get rid of physical copies.  Then each system could support older games without as much effort (from what little I understand about how backwards compatibility works).

The only way the consoles could go to a Steam system is if they could convince the publishers to offer HUGE discounts like Steam does so often on their games.  I'm sorry but I refuse to pay 60 dollars for a game I basically don't own.  But I will pay 12....

It definitely is a trade off.  On one hand, a company could stop offering the game based on a whim or bankruptcy.  On the other hand...if your disc breaks...that's an expensive replacement made of aluminum and plastic.

This would be a difficult model to pursue for consoles.  Consoles have more longevity compared to a PC because the console is custom-built solely for gaming.  Also, console developers often tweak their titles specifically for the console hardware.  This would make a Steam-like model difficult because backward compatibility would be very difficult between console generations.

That said, Valve has been semi-secretly working on the SteamBox, which looks like it will be a pared-down PC built specifically for TV gaming.  If they really do keep the PC architecture and they can hit a low price-point, they might be able to create a new type of console market that upgrades more frequently for a lower price.

I just saw that Final Fantasy VII was released on Steam.  Now, if we can Final Fantasy VI, IX, X, and XII, I can die a happy man!

Oh, and rumor has it the Steam Summer Sale might start today.  Interestingly, "Mystery" trading cards started dropping yesterday afternoon whenever a game badge is completed.  I grabbed 12 of them last night, as I assume they'll be part of the Summer Sale:

I've got a couple Steam keys from the latest Humble Bundle for some old-school RPGs I already own.  Let me know if you want them:

Avadon: The Black Fortress
Avernum: Escape from the Pit
Nethergate: Resurrection
